Mullet Wigs And Haircuts, Their History, Various Styles and Where To Find Out More

Celebrity Mullets Through Time
Where Did Mullets Come From?
After realizing the abundance of mullets that can found around the world today, it's hard to believe that there was once a time when the long-haired locks of awesomeness weren't around. But, the late 1960s and early 1970s there were no mullets to be found and it took the somewhat strange formation of David Bowie's alter ego and alien Ziggy Stardust to really create the buzz that eventually pushed the mullet into the mainstream. It didn't take other popular celebrities much time to carry on the mullet torch through the 1970s, with such stars such as Florence Henderson, the mother of The Brady Bunch, showing that mullets were more than just a thing for the guys.
The mullet really seemed to pick up some major steam as it made the leap from the experimental in the 1970s to the mainstream in the 1980s and early 1990s. Not only were more people now rocking a mullet, but they were wearing them bigger and prouder than ever before. Around this same there there was also an incredible adoption of the mullet among celebrities of all types including actors such as John Stamos, Richard Dean Anderson, Mel Gibson, Patrick Swayze, Hulk Hogan and musicians such as Michael Bolton, Phil Collins and of course probably the most mullet-famous of them all, Billy Ray Cyrus. The super hot hair trend even made its way into the world of cartoons with He-Man's blonde locks considered to be a legitimate version of a mullet. This indeed was a highpoint for the mullet as the growth of the alternative haircut among men and women both young and old was simply off the charts and would keep the momentum for mullets moving well into the year 2000 and beyond.
Current state of the Mullet
Even though the mullet's heyday was in the 1980s and early 1990s there are currently still plenty of people who still call the haircut their own. However, as opposed the the celebrity-fueled and mainstream popularity that it once had, a mullet is now thought of as something funny, humorous and a haircut that no one ever takes seriously. If you currently had a mullet you might be subjected to teasing, unwanted pictures being taken of you and an overall negative social stigma making it extremely difficult to live an ordinary, everyday life.
There have also been many stereotypes created around the type of person who would have a mullet. Some of these stereotypes include:
- Their beer of choice is Budweiser with Miller High Life and Natural Light being a close second and third
- They wear trucker hats with sayings on them that have something to do with 'Whooping Ass'
- They enjoy smoking Marlboro cigarettes
- Their music of choice is 1990s hair band-style rock
- They either wear a 'wife beater' type of tank top, a shirt from their favorite hair band or go completely shirtless
- They have a deep love for their pickup trucks, which is also their transportation of choice
Real vs. Fake Mullets: You Decide
The Mullet Becomes A Joke
With this recent move to a more laughable spot in pop culture, mullets have been seen less and less on the street and more and more inside of local costume shops. It's even gotten to the point where a mullet wig has now become a fun and crazy way to spice up a night on the town or to add a little something over the top to your next outfit on Halloween.
As the mullet is seen more and more as something ridiculous to society the demand for these types of mullet wigs and other mullet-related entertainment has been growing at an incredible rate. This demand has resulted in several websites dedicated specifically to mullet wigs, t-shirts, videos and anything else that you can think of. Even though most people would never think of getting a mullet haircut themselves, many still feel the need to view them online or to wear one themselves as a way to have a little fun. So, as it stands now, it seems as though the mullet isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so whether you want to style one, buy one or just look at one, there seems to be plenty of mullets to go around for everyone.

I was laughing because it hit me, how silly some haircuts and do's can be, yet, when they are fashionable it looks "beautiful" for those who want to join the fashion trend. Have been there done, that. LOL! Fun hub!
SweetiePie,
The pony tail is a very close cousin to the mullet and so is the infamous 'rat tail'. I can safely claim that I never had a mullet, but many of my friends did at one point. I'm sure it'll be back in style at some point.
Or then again...maybe not.
Violet - sometimes it's amazing what we'll do in the name of fashion. I definitely remember when I pegged(tight-rolled) my pants...that was pretty cool.
I've been having trouble deciding between a mullet and a flat top. Thanks to your photos, I think I see a way out! Cool hub, Hup!
Hey B.T. - I'm glad that I could help out. :)
Current popularity of mullets?? Hmmm, things must be different in San Fran then they are here.
There is something I take issue with - you said that my Mel was all about the mullet in his lethal weapon movies. No, my Mel would never sport such a do! That was a stylish man-shag, chick magnet cut. Very manly.
FYI - your Billy Ray Cyrus vid isn't working.
Great energy, Hup! Loved it. But take that back about my Mel.
I never was the proud owner of a mullet. Oh...I owned one, I just wasn't proud.
LOL...funny, Christoph! Smart, too.
Great hub!
Of course, you could say that Florence Henderson had a shag...not really a mullet :)
Great hairy hub Hup!, but you forgot Dog the Bounty hunter lol .....jimmy
I like your writing, it reflects your personality. "it's hard to believe that there was once a time when the long-haired locks of awesomeness weren't around." LOL. And a great ending, "a mullet brings the family together".
That was what I thought about Florence too, her hairdo was a shag. Of course, no one would get a shag like hers today that I know of :),
Shag, mullet...same thing. :)
The only difference is between the UK and the US!
I loved a mullet brings the family together, too funny.
As they used to say "business in the front...pleasure in the back"...y'know, I never really had anything personally against the mullet. Compared to that Faux-Hawk look that most men are sporting these days (which makes them look like a surprised cockatoo or a Sleestak from Land of the Lost)...I think I'd demand the return of the mullet.
Great hub!!
Awesome! Maybe someday we'll look back and laugh at the Posh-spice bob!
Ryan - The two strips of photos in your Hub each have a very pleasing, coordinated, and eye-catching color pallete! Wonderful content, but mullets make me cringe. Mohawks for everyone, I say. Thumbs up!
BT - I suggest for you the Tasha Yar Blond Bob from the Bobs Hub. Goes with the BlackHole Universe you'll be usurping. The eel's union will probobly spring for 7 million of them at your salon. lol lol
The mullet has a long history and with so many versions, men and women have sported the do, in a variety of lengths and colors,. Great job!
So funny & historical at the same time.
So let me get this straight, you 're blaming David Bowie for inventing the mullet? Now we all know.
That mullet family pic is seriously hilarious! Great hub!
That's a really funny hub, and some seriously scary hair! I'm also loving the family of mullets. They do look happy :)
To be honest I've never heard of a hairdo called a shag. And like Dottie1 pointed out, it means something quite different to those of us in the UK, so reading things like "man-shag" and "Florence Henderson had a shag", is making me laugh quite a bit. (In an very immature kind of way... Sorry!)
well I remember those haircuts very well in the 80" and thank God I never got one!
I know people today that still have the Mullet! lol
Stacie - you need to tell them to stop what they're doing right now....it's your job as their friend to make them mullet free!
Very nice, playing hockey in h.s., that was of course the cut. Enjoyed this hub much.
I wish I could sue the guy who invented the 80s mullet. Mullets these days are cool but back then...
This is a funny hub! Thanks for writing.
mullets are just - wrong. No other way to put it (-:
Ryan!! You're my brain twin.
Billy Ray Cyrus wouldn't haven't gotten as famous if he didn't have a mullet...and his bad dancing moves.
LoL, david bowie did it best!!!
I find mullets repulsing, but david bowie made it sexy!!! Course, i'm only 15, so who knows, i might find someone else who could pull it off.
I had a few of these Ryan I have to admit but I guess I'm a better man for it today!
I had to laugh at this because just recently I worked at a place where one of the guys kept tellling me that I needed to change my hairstyle becuase it was so out (I wear my hair long and straight so when I am at work I put it in a ponytail), the problem is it is kinda hard to take advice on hairdos from a guy wearing a mullet!!
My favorite mullet, other than what I once wore, was David Spade in "Joe Dirt" -- funny movie
The only guy who could ever really rock a mullet was Bono! Hair he is in 1982
nice and wonderful haircut and styles thanks for sharing those wonderful ,love to read your next article

Great hub about mullets. When I was in junior high there was a boy who sported a mullet and wore it in a pony tail. Our teacher was very old fashioned and tried to shame him into cutting his hair by teasing him that he had a little girl's pony tail. I am not sure a teacher could get away with that type of behavior today, but I suppose his hairdo was a little silly.
