A Brief History of Jelly Belly

In 1946 a man named David Klein was born into this world and he would be the man credited with creating a new type of single-flavored jelly bean that would eventually take the world of candy by storm. David first sold the first official 8 flavors of Jelly Bellys in 1976 out of Fosselman's, his ice cream parlor that was located in Alhambra, California.

With 34 millions pounds of candy created each year, Jelly Belly is now one of the world's largest candy producers and practically dominates the jelly bean market with the unique candy shell and flavored jelly center that make up the now 50+ flavors that Jelly Belly now offers.

Jeff talks about Belly Flops

What are Jelly Belly Belly Flops?

Jelly Belly has created a very strong brand name and product that stands for the best possible jelly bean that you can enjoy in the world, period. This is due to their very strict attention to details such as having every single jelly bean that could potentially end up in the hands of consumers be the same exact size that they have specified for years.

Well, considering the fact that their factory in California produces over 30 tons of their delicious jelly beans every single weekday, there are bound to be some jelly beans that don't exactly make the cut when it comes to being a 'perfect' Jelly Belly jelly bean. These irregular-sized and sometime funny looking jelly beans aren't scrapped or thrown away, instead they're packaged up by Jelly Belly and sold under the brilliant name of Belly Flops. They are packed up in two different sizes: 5oz and 2lbs.

Since their creation, these Belly Flops have found quite a fan following and are one of the most purchased items after visitors tour the Jelly Belly factories.

Where to Find/Buy Belly Flops

As the Belly Flop phenomenon grows, more and more places are starting to sell them which means that they're getting much easier to find. Also, the good news is that even though Belly Flops look a little funny, they still taste just as good as the original Jelly Belly jelly beans and they only cost half as much!

Here is a quick list of some of the more popular places that you can currently find/buy Belly Flops:

  • The Jelly Belly Factory Tours There are factory tours going on all the time at the Jelly Belly factories that are located in Fairfield, CA and Wisconsin Center, WI and visitors rarely leave with without buying at least a 5oz. bag of Belly Flops.
  • The Jelly Belly Retail Stores If you are ever in Califormia, there are 6 Jelly Belly retail stores that you can visit to get your Belly Flop fix.
  • Online at JellyBelly.com If you're looking for convenience, you can head to the official Jelly Belly online store to pick up some Belly Flops and have them shipped directly to your door. You can either buy the 2lb bag for $9.00. Or, if you really have the Belly Flop crave, you can buy a case of 12 2lb. bags for $97.20.
  • Online at Ebay.com There are lots of auctions that are selling all different quantities of Belly Flops on Ebay.com and it seems like they are a little bit cheaper than they are on the Jelly Belly online store.

We had a bunch of belly flops show up in the office today. Definitely a good way to spread the sugar rush around!

David, glad that you enjoyed your Flops and I'm thinking that you might be the last guy that needs any extra sugar rush.

MsLainieP, you learn something new everyday, eh? I didn't know that they existed either until yesterday when my parents brought me a couple bags back from the factory tour that they went on.

In my opninon, they're just as tasty and way less expensive. :)

My sister loved the buttered popcorn-flavored Jelly Bellies when we were kids. I've always gone for the sour mix, myself.

Sweet hub... no pun intended, really. I'm not THAT bad.

(PS, why aren't we voting on our favorite flop flavors. Did you already forget about the new voting feature???

I've never heard of Belly Flops~thanks for shedding the light. Who cares what they look like as long as they taste good & are cheaper, I'd just buy those instead.

I just bought these yesterday at the Grocery Outlet for $3 for a 2lb bag. Simply awesome. I am definitely going back after work to pick up 3 or 4 more bags!

I buy my Belly Flops from the 99 cents store. Yum!

They are much cheaper than the regular ones you can get from candy stores or groceries (one bag is like 3$)
